About
Professor Ying Fang's research over the past 20 years has concentrated on understanding the fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying viral pathogenesis and leveraging this knowledge to develop vaccines and diagnostic assays. Her current research projects focus on elucidating the mechanisms of persistent infection by swine arterivirus (PRRSV), creating novel mRNA-based influenza vaccines, and validating field-deployable nanosensor diagnostic assays for emerging swine viral pathogens. These efforts are supported by prominent agencies including the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Pork Board (NPB), and Swine Health Information Center (SHIC). Professor Fang's work addresses significant challenges in veterinary virology, such as the development of broadly protective vaccines against genetically diverse viruses like influenza A and foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), as well as the creation of sensitive, rapid, and portable diagnostic tools for diseases impacting swine health, including African swine fever virus (ASFV) and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). Her research also extends to studying the human-animal interface of COVID-19 by developing novel reagents, assays, and animal models to understand and mitigate zoonotic transmission risks. Overall, Professor Fang's contributions advance both fundamental virology and practical applications in disease surveillance, prevention, and control within veterinary medicine.

Photonic Crystal Enhanced Microscopy on a 2D Photonic Crystal Surface
Advanced Materials Technologies · 2025-01-08 · 9 citations
articleOpen accessDigital-resolution biosensing based on resonant reflection from photonic crystals (PC) has demonstrated significant potential for detection of proteomic and genomic biomarkers in serology, infectious disease diagnostics, and cancer diagnostics. An important intrinsic characteristic of resonant metamaterial surfaces is that enhanced electromagnetic fields are not uniformly distributed, resulting in spatially variable light-matter interactions with nanoparticle tags that signal the presence of bio…

articleDevelopment of polymer systems capable of counteracting surface-induced fibrillogenesis
The Ukrainian Biochemical Journal · 2025-02-27 · 1 citations
articleOpen accessIt is known that the use of medical devices having polymer surfaces exposed to blood flow often leads to thrombogenesis. The mechanism of thrombus formation depends, in part, on the hydrophobic/hydrophilic nature and adhesive properties of the surface, on which spontaneously initiated fibrillogenesis can occur in the absence of thrombin. In this work, the connection between the “Berg limit” and the ability of polymer surfaces to aggregate fibrinogen into fiber structures was investigated using t…
Photonic Crystal Enhanced Microscopy on a 2D Photonic Crystal Surface (Adv. Mater. Technol. 6/2025)
Advanced Materials Technologies · 2025-03-01 · 1 citations
articleOpen accessPhotonic Crystal Enhanced Microscopy In article number 2401837, Brian T. Cunningham and co-workers present a revolutionized 2D hole-array photonic crystal (PC), fabricated using cost-effective replica molding, that enables generation of uniform electromagnetic near-field enhancement under non-polarized illumination. This advancement improves SARS-CoV-2 antibody detection based on photonic resonator absorption microscopy, offering enhanced contrast, uniform signal distribution, a finer point spre…
