About
Anashua Rani Ghose Elwy is the Warren Alpert Foundation Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and a Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University. She is a health psychologist, health services researcher, and implementation scientist. Dr. Elwy is the Founding Director of the Brown Research on Implementation and Dissemination to Guide Evidence Use (BRIDGE) Program, which promotes the translation, dissemination, and scaling of evidence-based practices into routine clinical and community-based care both in Rhode Island and nationally. Her research examines patients’ access to and uptake of behavioral health care, the effectiveness and implementation of complementary and integrative health services for mental health and pain management, and crisis and risk communication among patients, families, providers, and health systems. Building on over a decade of research, she developed a health system-wide Disclosure Support Program aimed at increasing transparent and open communication in healthcare settings based on evidence-based communication practices. Dr. Elwy has led national and global initiatives in improvement science, including strategies to enhance vaccine acceptance communication. She has been appointed to the White House Science and Technology Policy workgroup on Pandemic Innovation and contributed to the first American Pandemic Preparedness Plan in 2022. During the 2024-25 academic year, she served as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow in the office of U.S. Senator Patty Murray, where she integrated research evidence into legislative and policy work. She is also a Class of 2024 Presidential Leadership Scholar, committed to addressing critical challenges through leadership development. Dr. Elwy is an elected Fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine and has received a VA Research Career Scientist Award. Her affiliations at Brown include the Departments of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Psychiatry and Human Behavior.

CIH therapies offer the medical system low risk and effective interventions that meet patient needs not currently met by Western medicine. However, implementation is difficult due to poor perception of evidence and lack of financial gain for the medical system. Acupuncture and massage may be modalities better situated for implementation in the RI medical system. Further education, awareness, and advocacy for CIH therapies would help meet patients' needs for CIH availability.
