Noam Lior is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania. He holds additional positions as a Guest Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is recognized as a Life Fellow of ASME, a Full Member of the Club of Rome, a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science, and an Associate Fellow of AIAA. His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, obtained in 1973, as well as M.S. and B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Technion in Haifa, Israel, earned in 1966 and 1962 respectively. His research encompasses a broad range of topics including energy conversion, combustion, and thermodynamics, with fundamental work on oil and pulverized coal combustion, pollutant reduction, solar thermal energy conversion, advanced power cycles, and the use of liquefied natural gas coldness in power generation. He also focuses on thermodynamics, particularly second-law (exergy) analysis related to chemical and nuclear reactions, and power generation in space for terrestrial use. Additionally, his work addresses sustainable energy development, water desalination processes such as flash evaporation, membrane distillation, and integrated desalination and power systems, as well as sustainability science, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and manufacturing processes.
