About
Karen S. Emmerman, PhD, is an independent scholar and part-time faculty member in the Department of Philosophy and the Comparative History of Ideas program at the University of Washington. She serves as the Education Director of the Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization (PLATO), Philosopher-in-Residence at John Muir Elementary School in Seattle, and Associate Editor of the journal Precollege Philosophy and Public Practice (P4). Her primary research area is ecofeminist animal ethics, focusing on conflicts of interest between humans and other animals. She is currently working on a book proposal exploring the complex moral dimensions of managing obligations to animals when these conflict with important familial and cultural traditions. Additionally, she investigates what moral repair might look like in inter-species settings, particularly within the context of animal sanctuaries. As an intersectional scholar and activist, she contributes to the Food Empowerment Project, a vegan food justice organization, by serving on its Advisory Board.
