Janet Johnson

About

Janet H. Johnson is the Morton D. Hull Distinguished Service Professor of Egyptology at The University of Chicago, where she has been teaching since 1971. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, obtained in 1972. Her main research interests include the Egyptian language and Egypt in the 'Late Period' of the 1st millennium B.C. Her scholarly work encompasses the development of educational materials such as her grammar of Demotic, including a third edition available online, and an analysis of the Demotic verbal system. Johnson has contributed to Egyptological studies through numerous articles on topics such as compound nouns in Demotic, women, property, and legal documents from the Persian Period, and gender and marriage in ancient Egypt. She is also the Director of the Chicago Demotic Dictionary Project, reflecting her active involvement in lexicographical research. Her academic career is marked by a focus on Egypt's linguistic, social, and legal history, with a particular emphasis on the Demotic language and its cultural context.
