Henri P Gavin is the W. H. Gardner Jr. Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Duke University. His research themes include Computational Mechanics & Scientific Computing, Geomechanics & Geophysics for Energy and the Environment, and Risk & Resilient Systems. He holds a B.S.E. from Princeton University and both an M.Sc.Eng. and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Gavin has contributed extensively to the fields of structural dynamics, uncertainty, design, and optimization, with a focus on seismic response, earthquake engineering, and the development of models for civil structures and systems. His work involves the analysis and control of nonlinear and chaotic systems, rolling resistance, and the seismic response of critical infrastructure, among other topics. Gavin has received numerous awards and honors for his leadership and teaching, including the Bass Connections Award for Outstanding Leadership, the Earl I Brown II Outstanding Civil Engineering Faculty Award, and the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize.
