Dwight Perkins is the Harold Hitchigs Burbank Professor of Political Economy, Emeritus at Harvard University. His previous positions at Harvard include Associate Director of the East Asian (now Fairbank) Research Center from 1973 to 1977, chairman of the Department of Economics from 1977 to 1980, Director of the Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID) from 1980 to 1995, and Director of the Harvard University Asia Center from 2002 to 2005. Perkins has authored or edited twelve books and over one hundred articles focusing on economic history and economic development, with particular emphasis on the economies of East and Southeast Asia. His research topics include the transition from central planning to market economies, long-term agricultural development, industrial policy, the sources of growth in East Asia, and the role of economic and legal institutions in regional growth. He has served as an advisor or consultant on economic policy and reform to the governments of Korea, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. Additionally, Perkins has been a long-term consultant to organizations such as the World Bank, the Ford Foundation, private corporations, and U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. His academic roles include visiting positions at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, the University of Washington, and Fudan University in Shanghai. He has also been a Phi Beta Kappa Lecturer at multiple U.S. colleges and universities and has taught in the Fulbright Economic Training Program in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Perkins served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1958, earned his B.A. from Cornell University in Far Eastern Studies in 1956, and completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics at Harvard University in 1961 and 1964. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society and various professional organizations in economics and Asian Studies.
