Dietrich Neumann is the Christopher Chan and Michelle Ma Professor of the History of Modern Architecture and Urbanism at Brown University. He was trained as an architect in Munich, Germany, and at the Architectural Association in London, earning his PhD from the Technical University of Munich. His research concentrates on late 19th and early 20th Century European and American architecture, with particular interest in architectural production and debate, from building technologies to transatlantic discourse on skyscrapers and urbanism throughout the 20th Century. Neumann's publications have addressed topics such as the history of skyscrapers, movie set design, architectural illumination, building materials, and the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, including a biography published in 2024 by Yale University Press.
