About
Denise Gigante is the Sadie Dernham Patek Professor in the Humanities and a Professor of English at Stanford University. She teaches British poetry with a concentration in the Romantic period. Her scholarly work includes authoring books such as Book Madness: A Story of Book Collectors in America, which explores the dispersal of Charles Lamb’s library in the mid-nineteenth century, and The Keats Brothers: The Life of John and George. She has also edited The Cambridge History of the British Essay, the first authoritative single-volume history of the essay form's development within the British literary tradition. Her research interests encompass book history, bibliomania, poetry and poetic form, Romanticism, the essay form, transnational studies, William Blake and visual culture, aesthetics, 19th-century transatlanticism, literature and philosophy, and the intersection of literature and life sciences. She is currently completing a work on William Blake’s illuminated poetry in the context of Christian artwork from the late twelfth through the early sixteenth century, focusing on themes of salvation history and the energies of Catholicism as expressed through allegory, symbolism, and schematic diagrams.
