David B. Owens is an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Washington School of Law and the Director of the Civil Rights and Justice Clinic (CRJC). His work primarily involves representing plaintiffs in civil rights lawsuits in federal courts across Washington, California, Hawaii, and beyond. Owens is also a partner at Loevy & Loevy, a national civil rights law firm, where he has litigated numerous civil rights cases involving constitutional violations, wrongful convictions, police violence, excessive force, race discrimination, and First Amendment issues. Owens has a background as a clerk for Diane P. Wood of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and Myron H. Thompson of the Middle District of Alabama. He has taught at the University of Chicago Law School as a Lecturer in Law with the Exoneration Project and at Stanford Law School as an adjunct lecturer. An alumnus of the University of Washington, Owens earned two undergraduate degrees in philosophy and political science. He is actively involved in civil rights organizations, serving on the boards of the Innocence Network and the Washington Innocence Project, and is a member of the Legal Committee for the ACLU of Washington Foundation. His scholarly work and public commentary focus on issues of police misconduct, wrongful convictions, and civil rights litigation.
