About

Dr. Wen-Tso Liu holds the Arthur Nauman Endowed Professorship in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he has been a faculty member since 2008. His research primarily focuses on the microbiome, exploring the ecological roles of microbes in various water systems—including watersheds, drinking water systems, wastewater treatment, and reclamation systems—as well as in animal gut systems. His work aims to understand microbial diversity, metabolic functions such as carbon and nitrogen cycling, and how microbial communities can be influenced or controlled within water systems to improve water cycling and protect public health. Dr. Liu's scientific contributions include leveraging advanced analytical methods such as next-generation DNA sequencing technologies, metagenomics, and single-cell genomics to decipher microbial functions and diversity, particularly in anaerobic digesters and drinking water microbiomes. He is the lead principal investigator for the DOE-funded Digester Microbiome Project, which investigates microbial diversity and function in anaerobic digesters to maximize biogas production. Additionally, he has collaborated on developing integrated wastewater treatment systems for the soft drink industry, successfully implementing pilot-scale systems. His research addresses critical challenges in understanding microbial roles in water quality and health, contributing significantly to environmental microbiology and…
