Steven Morrison

About

Steven Morrison is a Professor of Music Education at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music. He specializes in instrumental music teaching and learning, music psychology, and research methods, with an emphasis on the connections between cognitive and sociological aspects of music-making as fundamental to music education. His research explores how auditory and visual information are integrated within music ensembles to inform judgments of musical expression, and how concepts such as congruity and synchrony serve as foundational components of ensemble experiences. Morrison also investigates music learning as a culturally situated phenomenon, exploring whether the construct of cultural distance can help understand the challenges faced by teachers and students crossing musical boundaries. He has contributed extensively to scholarly publications, including articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Music Perception, and the Oxford Handbooks of Music and the Brain, among others. Morrison has served as an editor and associate editor for prominent journals in the field. His academic career includes positions as a professor and chair of music education at the University of Washington, where he also conducted the UW Symphonic Band and directed the Laboratory for Music Cognition, Culture and Learning.
