Rob Dixon

About

Rob Dixon is a tenor saxophonist whose music reflects both respect for tradition and a free expression of musical diversity. After graduating from Hampton University and Indiana University’s School of Music, he moved to New York City, where he worked with legendary and popular artists including the Count Basie Band, The Ellington Band, Slide Hampton, Dakota Stanton, The Illinois Jacquet Big Band, Rufus Reid, Akira Tana, Jonah Jones, Bill Lee, Weldon Irving, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and The Skatalites. Returning to Indianapolis in 2003, Dixon continued to collaborate with internationally renowned artists such as pianist Steve Allee, drummer Steve Houghton, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, drummer Mike Clark, the Head Hunters, guitarist Dave Stryker, and seven-string guitar virtuoso Charlie Hunter. In 2018, he recorded an album as a leader titled “Coast to Crossroads,” produced by Charlie Hunter, featuring Hunter on guitar, Mike Clark on drums, and guest trombonist Ernest Stuart. That same year, Dixon’s live recordings with Mike Clark’s Indigo Blue band, which included prominent musicians like Christian McBride, Donald Harrison, Randy Brecker, and Antonio Farao, were released. Dixon founded the ensemble Triology in 2005 and the Indianapolis Jazz Collective in 2012, the latter of which has recorded an album titled “Jazz on Canvas” and featured guest artists such as Stefon Harris, Bobby Watson, and Randy Brecker.
