Stephen P. Goff, PhD, is the Higgins Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics and a Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. His research has focused on viruses and their interactions with the host throughout his career. Over the past three decades, his laboratory has concentrated on the replication of mammalian retroviruses, including Moloney murine leukemia virus and HIV-1, aiming to define the functions of viral gene products and identify host proteins involved in viral interactions. His work has significantly contributed to understanding all aspects of the viral life cycle, including the characterization of host restriction factors such as ZAP, which degrades viral mRNAs to block gene expression of various viruses, and ZFP809, which recognizes and silences retroviral DNA in embryonic stem cells. Goff's research also explores chromatinization and silencing mechanisms of incoming retroviral DNA, as well as the role of endogenous viral proteins in tumor immunology. He is dedicated to training students and fellows, having mentored approximately thirty-five PhD students and an equal number of postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have gone on to prominent positions in academia, research institutions, and industry.
