Robin Bates

About

Robin Bates (Ph.D., The University of Chicago, 2015) is a historian specializing in modern France and the francophone world, with a focus on political culture in the decades following the Revolution of 1789. His work examines how education, during a period of significant upheaval, was used as a means to reshape relationships of power, including those between parents and children, masters and slaves, men and women, and political leaders and their populations, as a way to envision and implement a new social order. His ongoing research project, titled Regimes of Education: Pedagogy and the Political Reconstruction of Postrevolutionary France, 1789-1848, explores the ways in which educational theories and practices were intertwined with political and social reconstruction during this transformative period. Bates has contributed to the field through publications on topics such as race and moralization in the French imperial plantation zone, domestic pedagogy in post-revolutionary France, and the history of capitalism and political culture in France. He is an assistant professor of instruction and holds the Ian Sanders Chair in History at Northwestern University.
