Alexandra Montero Peters is an assistant professor of Medieval European History at Northwestern University, with a focus on the medieval Mediterranean, specifically the intellectual exchange between Iberia, North Africa, and the Near East. Her research primarily involves working with Arabic and Castilian manuscripts to investigate how textual, visual, and intellectual traditions crossed confessional, cultural, and racial boundaries. Her current book project, 'Representations of Power: Alfonso X, the Book of Games, and the Islamic Tradition,' is a detailed study of a richly illuminated manuscript produced in the court of Alfonso X the Learned of Castile. This work explores how Islamic tradition influenced the esoteric knowledge in the manuscript and how Mediterranean rulers like Alfonso X used such texts to articulate authority and political power across cultural boundaries. Her research emphasizes the role of Muslim-Christian exchange in shaping political and intellectual discourses in the Mediterranean region, offering a reimagined perspective on how ideas travel across time and space. Additionally, she has forthcoming publications on race and race-craft in the Middle Ages, investigating the racialized representations of India in Castilian and Arabic manuscripts to understand premodern notions of race in Christian and Islamic traditions.
