Robert S. Chang

About

Professor Robert S. Chang is a distinguished scholar and legal educator specializing in issues of race, interethnic relations, and Asian American legal studies. He holds the position of Professor of Law and the Sylvia Mendez Presidential Chair for Civil Rights at UC Irvine School of Law, where he also serves as the Executive Director of the Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality. Professor Chang is recognized as one of the nation's leading voices on Asian Americans and the law, with a prolific publication record that includes books, articles, and essays on minority relations, critical race theory, LatCrit theory, and civil rights history. He founded the Korematsu Center in 2009 at Seattle University School of Law, which focuses on research, advocacy, and clinical education related to civil rights and equality. His scholarship has earned numerous awards and recognitions, including the 2024 Daniel K. Inouye Trailblazer Award and the lifetime achievement award from the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. Professor Chang has held faculty positions at Seattle University School of Law and Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, and he holds degrees from Princeton University (A.B.) and Duke University (M.A. and J.D.).
