Courtney Cahill

About

Courtney Cahill is a Chancellor's Professor of Law at UC Irvine Law School. Her scholarly work focuses on constitutional law, anti-discrimination law, reproductive rights, sex equality, and LGBTQ equality. Her research examines the role of disgust in lawmaking, the intersections between sex equality and LGBTQ equality, and the relationship between marginal practices such as same-sex marriage and alternative reproduction and mainstream norms. She is engaged in forthcoming projects including essays on constitutional sex equality, particularly in the context of abortion rights post-Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, and a paper arguing that ongoing commitments to 'real differences between the sexes' cannot survive LGBTQ equality. Her upcoming book, 'Equality or Bust,' explores laws that criminalize women's bodies, such as laws against women going topless in public, and considers broader implications of outlawing women's bodies. Cahill is a two-time Dukeminier Award winner and has published in prominent law journals including Yale Law Journal, Harvard Law Review, Michigan Law Review, and others. She holds a J.D. from Yale Law School, a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University, and a B.A. from Columbia University. Her academic background includes fellowships and awards at Princeton and Yale, and her scholarship addresses critical issues at the intersection of law, gender, and equality.
