Ricardo Perez-Truglia is a Professor of Economics at UCLA Anderson and holds the Justice Elwood Lui Endowed Term Chair in Management. His research primarily focuses on income inequality, the gender pay gap, pay transparency, and tax compliance. He investigates salary disparities between co-workers and households, exploring how face-to-face interactions with managers may contribute to the gender pay gap and how extreme inequality affects public support for taxing the ultra-wealthy. Perez-Truglia has studied the effects of salary comparisons on employee motivation, finding that employees tend to work less after discovering they earn slightly less than their co-workers, but work harder when they learn their managers earn significantly more, hoping to attain such a position.

  In 2001, Norwegian tax records became easily accessible online, allowing everyone in the country to observe the incomes of everyone else. According to the income comparisons model, this change in transparency can widen the gap in well-being between richer and poorer individuals.
