About
Ricardo Dominguez was a founding member of Critical Art Ensemble and a cofounder of Electronic Disturbance Theater 1.0, a group that developed virtual sit-in technologies in solidarity with the Zapatistas communities in Chiapas, Mexico, in 1998. His recent project with the Electronic Disturbance Theater 2.0/b.a.n.g. lab, the Transborder Immigrant Tool, was a GPS cell phone safety net tool for crossing the Mexico/US border, which received the Transnational Communities Award in 2008 and has been exhibited at numerous international venues including the California Biennial, Toronto Free Gallery, Van Abbemuseum, ZKM, and others. The project was also under investigation by US Congress, FBI, Homeland Security, UCSD, and UCOP, and was reviewed by Glenn Beck in 2010. Dominguez is an associate professor at the University of California, San Diego, in the Visual Arts Department, a Hellman Fellow, and Principal/Principal Investigator at CALIT2/Qi, UCSD. He is also co-founder of the particle group, an art project about nano-toxicology, which has been presented internationally. He has held fellowships at Cornell University, the Bellagio Center in Italy, and the UCLA Luskin Institute on Inequality and Democracy. Additionally, he participated in a video series titled 'An Oral History of the Internet' for the NYUAD Art Gallery. Ricardo Dominguez's research focuses on critical art, digital activism, and the intersection of technology and social issues.
