About

James T. Hamilton is the Freeman-Thornton Chair for the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Hearst Professor of Communication, and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. He is also the Director of the Stanford Journalism Program. His research focuses on media markets, information provision, and computational journalism, exploring how the costs of story discovery can be lowered through better use of data and algorithms. Hamilton has authored several books on media and information markets, including 'All the News That’s Fit to Sell,' 'Regulation Through Revelation,' 'Channeling Violence,' and 'Democracy's Detectives.' He is a co-founder of the Stanford Computational Journalism Lab and holds affiliations with the Brown Institute for Media Innovation. His academic background includes a PhD in Economics and a BA in Economics and Government from Harvard University. Hamilton has received numerous awards for his research and teaching, including the David N Kershaw Award, the Goldsmith Book Prize, and the Frank Luther Mott Research Award, among others.
