Fred Turner is the Chair of the Department of Communication at Stanford University, where he also holds the position of Harry and Norman Chandler Professor of Communication and is the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Communication. His research and teaching focus on media technology and cultural change, with a particular interest in how emerging media have influenced American life since World War II. Turner is the author of five books, including 'The Democratic Surround: Multimedia and American Liberalism from World War II to the Psychedelic Sixties,' 'From Counterculture to Cyberculture: Stewart Brand, the Whole Earth Network and the Rise of Digital Utopianism,' 'Echoes of Combat: The Vietnam War in American Memory,' 'Seeing Silicon Valley: Life Inside a Fraying America' (co-authored with Mary Beth Meehan), and 'L'Usage de l'Art: de Burning Man à Facebook, art, technologie et management dans la Silicon Valley.' His essays have addressed topics such as the rise of reality crime television and the Burning Man festival's role in contemporary new media industries, and are available on his personal website. Turner's research has received numerous academic awards and has been featured in prominent publications including Science and the New York Times, with translations into multiple languages.
