Peter Mancuso, PhD, MS, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. His research focuses on understanding how obesity and diabetes impact pulmonary infections and systemic inflammation in chronic disease. Dr. Mancuso investigates why individuals with obesity and diabetes experience greater severity of illness from respiratory tract infections, including insights gained during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2009 Influenza A pandemic. His work involves studying lung macrophages, leukocytes, and serum from rodents and humans to characterize intracellular signaling events, inflammatory mediator synthesis, glucose transport, and bactericidal function.
