Peter Ernst

About

Peter Ernst is a Professor of Pathology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His educational background includes a BSc from the University of Toronto (Trinity College), a DVM from Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, and advanced degrees including an MSc and PhD in Epidemiology and Mucosal Immunology from McMaster University. His research focuses on gastrointestinal immunology and mucosal defense, with particular interest in the mechanisms of immune responses in the human stomach and gut. Ernst's work involves immunoprofiling for identifying biomarkers in celiac disease and exploring the role of adenosine receptors in Th cell development and function. He has contributed to understanding the gut microbiota's role in intestinal homeostasis, inflammation, and defense, as well as investigating microbial-driven immunological memory and microbiome editing for colorectal cancer prevention. His research activities are supported by multiple NIH grants, and he has authored numerous publications in the field of immunology, microbiology, and gastrointestinal disease.
