Michael H. Gelb is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Washington, where he holds the Boris and Barbara L. Weinstein Endowed Chair in Chemistry. He earned his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1982 and has since established a distinguished career in the fields of analytical chemistry, catalysis, chemical biology, organic chemistry, and enzymology. His research focuses on understanding and applying biochemical processes, with notable contributions to newborn screening, for which he has received multiple awards including the American Public Health Laboratories Guthrie Award in 2022 and the American Chemical Society Repligen Award in Biological Chemistry in 2018. Gelb has been recognized for his significant contributions to the field, including the National MPS Society Legacy Award in 2024 and the Gustavus John Esselen Award from Harvard University in 2013.
