About
Meredith Silberstein received her Ph.D. in June 2011 from the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering, with a major in solid mechanics and a minor in energy. She subsequently served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Beckman Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she investigated mechanochemically active materials. Her research interests are centered on using mechanical experiments and modeling methods in material design, with particular focus on multifunctional, active, and polymeric materials. She leads the Mechanics for Materials Design (MMD) Lab, which explores computational solid mechanics, materials design, micro/nano systems, solid mechanics, and advanced manufacturing and materials. Silberstein's teaching interests include statics, mechanics, mechanical properties of materials, and polymers. Her work has contributed to understanding the activation of mechanophores within viscous rubbery networks, deformation mechanisms of non-woven polypropylene, and the development of morphing metal and elastomer bicontinuous foams for soft machines. She has received numerous awards, including the DARPA Young Faculty Award, NSF Career Award, and the DOE Early Career Award, recognizing her contributions to mechanics and material design.
