Matilde Córdoba Azcárate is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, San Diego. She co-directs the Nature, Space and Politics Faculty and Graduate Group as well as the Design Lab's Just Transitions Initiative. Additionally, she holds affiliate faculty positions in several interdisciplinary programs including The Urban Studies and Planning Department, The Global South Studies, The Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies, The Chicano/a Latino/a Arts and Humanities Program, the International Institute, and the Climate Action Lab. Her research focuses on the relations between the production of space and late capitalism, with a particular interest in how ordinary people understand the material, symbolic, and environmental transformations caused by economic and ecological crises. Her published research primarily examines tourism development and its connections to capitalist logics of accumulation by dispossession, land enclosure, and ecological neglect. Concurrently, her ongoing research investigates mega-infrastructure development within the contexts of redistributive politics, renewable energy reform, and corporate urban growth. Currently, she is engaged in historical and ethnographic research to explore the relationships between mega-infrastructure projects, emancipatory politics, and the imagination of the future amid anthropogenic climate change.
