Margo Natalie Crawford

About

Margo Natalie Crawford is the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Professor for Faculty Excellence at the University of Pennsylvania's Department of English. She received her Ph.D. from Yale University's American Studies Program and is a scholar specializing in 20th and 21st century African American literature and visual culture, as well as global black studies. Her scholarship crosses boundaries between literature, visual art, and cultural movements, opening new ways of understanding black radical imaginations. Crawford's research interests include performance studies, comparative ethnic studies, radical black feminism, and theories of the black diaspora. She is the author of several works, including 'Black Post-Blackness: The Black Arts Movement and Twenty-First-Century Aesthetics' (2017), which compares the black avant-garde of the 1960s and 70s Black Arts movement with contemporary black aesthetics, demonstrating that the cultural mood of the 1970s 'second wave' of the Black Arts movement is as 'black post-black' as 21st-century black aesthetics. Her other notable publication is 'Dilution Anxiety and the Black Phallus' (2008), and she is a co-editor of volumes such as 'New Thoughts on the Black Arts Movement' and 'Global Black Consciousness.'   Learning to read is the most important outcome of primary education. However, despite substantial improvements in primary school enrolment, most students in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) fail to learn to read by age 10.
