Chenshu Zhou is an Assistant Professor of Cinema & Media Studies in the Department of History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her PhD from Stanford University in 2016 and has held postdoctoral teaching positions at NYU Shanghai and Stanford University. Her research primarily focuses on China, exploring questions related to cinema and media, including exhibition and moviegoing, cinema ontology, screen cultures, media archaeology, and media infrastructure. Her forthcoming book, Cinema Off Screen: Moviegoing in Socialist China, rethinks the institutional, ideological, and cultural role of film exhibition, demonstrating that film exhibition can produce meaning independently of the films shown. It examines film exhibition in China from 1949 to the early 1990s, drawing on archival research, interviews, and audience recollections to explore how screening spaces, media technology, and the human body mediate encounters with cinema. Currently, she is expanding her research into the material history of Chinese cinema through a project on cinematic objects and exploring the relationship between time-based media and transportation infrastructure, such as bridges and highways. She is also guest editing a special issue of the Journal of Chinese Cinemas titled “Spaces of Encounter.” In her teaching, Zhou emphasizes empowering students to learn in personally meaningful ways and teaches courses in both the History of Art Department and the Cinema and Media Studies…
