About
Julia H. Lee is a professor of Asian American Studies at the University of California, Irvine. She teaches courses on Asian American literature, race and urban space, Asian American communities, and Asian American popular culture. Her research interests include Asian American literature and culture, Ethnic American literature and culture, early twentieth-century African American literature, and topics related to American railroad history, Chinese exclusion, Angel Island poems, and Maxine Hong Kingston. Her scholarly work focuses on contemporary Asian American literature, particularly an emerging sub-genre she terms the Asian American neo-frontier narrative, which explores stories of Asian American or Asian diasporic characters moving across the American West in the nineteenth century. She also investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Asian Americans and Asian diasporans, analyzing how narratives during this period reflect and alter perceptions of Asian racial difference, embodying contradictions such as being both carriers of contagion and leaders in bio-technological innovation. Her contributions include numerous publications, including books, essays, and edited volumes, that examine themes of race, history, and cultural representation within Asian American and African American contexts.
