Judith Kroll

About

Judith F. Kroll is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Education at the University of California, Irvine. She completed her undergraduate degree at New York University and graduate degrees at Brandeis University. Her academic career includes faculty positions at Swarthmore College, Rutgers University, Mount Holyoke College, and Penn State University, where she joined in 1994. She moved her lab to UCR in 2016 and to UCI in 2019. Her research focuses on how bilinguals manage the presence of two languages within one mind and brain. Supported by grants from NSF and NIH, her work reveals that bilingualism offers a unique window into the interplay between language and cognition, which is otherwise difficult to observe in monolingual speakers. She is a co-founder of Women in Cognitive Science and has served as a founding editor of the journal Bilingualism: Language and Cognition. Kroll is a Fellow of the AAAS, the APA, the APS, the Psychonomic Society, and the Society of Experimental Psychologists. She is also the PI on a NSF PIRE grant aimed at developing an international research network and training program for language scientists to pursue research abroad on bilingualism.
