Jonathan Lande is an Associate Professor of History at Purdue University in the College of Liberal Arts. His research focuses on the Civil War era and 19th-century African American history. He earned his PhD in History from Brown University in May 2018, with a specialization in these areas. Lande is the author of the book "Freedom Soldiers," which explores the history of enlisted Black soldiers who fought for liberation during the Civil War in various military and civilian contexts. Before joining Purdue, he held positions such as the Brown University-Tougaloo College Exchange Faculty Fellow and the Schwartz Postdoctoral Fellow at the New York Historical Society and the New School. He has received several awards, including the Allan Nevins Dissertation Prize, the Cromwell Dissertation Prize, the Du Bois-Wells Paper Prize, and the William F. Holmes Paper Prize. Additionally, he was recognized for excellence in discovery and creative endeavors at Purdue and received the Brown University Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. Lande has published extensively in prominent journals and has been a research fellow at notable institutions such as the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Huntington Library, Harvard University, and Yale University’s Gilder Lehrman Center. He has delivered papers at major historical organizations and has been featured on C-SPAN discussing topics related to formerly enslaved men who deserted the U.S. Army. He is currently accepting graduate students interested in Civil War and African American history.
