Johanna W. Lampe is a Research Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington, affiliated with the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. She holds a PhD in Nutritional Science from the University of Minnesota, earned in 1990, along with a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Nutritional Science from the same institution. Her research focuses on the mechanisms by which components of diet, particularly constituents of plant foods, influence susceptibility to and risk of cancer. Her primary research involves using controlled dietary interventions in humans to understand how individual biochemical responses to high-plant food diets, such as biotransformation enzyme modulation and changes in the colonic environment, may explain differences in disease risk. Additionally, her lab studies the effect of diet on gut microbial communities and the relationship of the gut microbiome to biomarkers of cancer risk, routinely measuring biomarkers like isoflavones and lignans for population-based studies.
