About
Jiwei Li is a remote sensing scientist, biological oceanographer, and computer scientist. His research explores interactions between human and natural systems, particularly at the land-ocean interface. He combines remote sensing with physically scalable analytical algorithms, big data analysis, cloud computing, and machine learning to understand the impacts of human activities on aquatic systems such as oceans, rivers, and lakes. His work aims to protect Earth's resources, including coral reefs, freshwater, and fish, and to promote a more sustainable future. Li holds a Ph.D. in Geosciences from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where his dissertation focused on estimating colored dissolved organic matter in inland waters using water bio-optical properties and remote sensing. He also earned a master's degree in GIS and Remote Sensing from Capital Normal University and a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Northwest University. His expertise areas include air quality, artificial intelligence, big data, biodiversity, biogeoscience, earth systems and climate science, geographic information science, machine learning, marine ecology, oceanography, remote sensing, water, watersheds, hydrology, and mapping. He is actively involved in research, teaching, and public work, and serves on the editorial board of the journal Remote Sensing.
