About
Jessica Harland-Jacobs is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Florida, specializing in the history of the British Empire, the Atlantic world, and comparative imperialism. She holds a BA in history from Cornell University obtained in 1992, and both her MA and PhD from Duke University, completed in 2000. Her scholarly work includes her first book, 'Builders of Empire: Freemasonry and British Imperialism, 1717-1927,' published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2007. Her research explores themes related to empire-building, religious diversity management within imperial contexts, and the role of fraternal organizations like Freemasonry in shaping imperial policies. She has published extensively in academic journals and edited volumes, contributing to the understanding of religious accommodation, anti-Catholicism, and transnational networks within the British Empire. Currently, she is working on a book project examining how empires managed religious diversity by analyzing the incorporation of Catholic colonies into the British Empire from the early eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. Professor Harland-Jacobs is also recognized for her teaching excellence, having received multiple awards, and she actively mentors graduate students and undergraduates in research related to modern Britain, the British Empire, Ireland, and the Atlantic world.
