About

Jennifer Allen is an Assistant Professor of Technology, Operations, and Statistics at NYU Stern School of Business, having joined the faculty in July 2025. Her research focuses on how the digital media environment influences people's attitudes, decisions, and behavior. She aims to develop scalable solutions to improve online platforms by leveraging collective intelligence and large language models. Her work draws on theories in psychology and communication, utilizing a diverse methodological toolkit that includes behavioral experiments, crowdsourcing, and large-scale data analysis. Allen's research agenda includes understanding the problems caused by social media, particularly the mechanisms and magnitude of harm from misinformation and persuasive content online. She also investigates solutions, such as how crowdsourcing—exemplified by platforms like X’s Community Notes—can provide scalable content moderation strategies. Prior to her appointment at NYU Stern, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania in the Computational Social Science Lab. Her professional background includes work at Microsoft Research in New York, where she was part of the Computational Social Science group, as well as roles at Meta as a software engineer on the News and Civic Teams, and at ACRONYM, a digital political advertising agency. Her work has been published in top journals including Science, PNAS, Nature Human Behavior, and the Proceedings of the CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. Allen holds a BA in Computer Science and Psychology from Yale University, a Master’s in Management Research from MIT Sloan School of Management, and a PhD in Management Science from MIT Sloan.
