About
Garrick Louis is a Professor of Engineering and Society (E&S) and Professor of Systems & Information Engineering (SIE) at the University of Virginia. His research investigates Engineering for the Greater Good (EGG), with an emphasis on access to infrastructure services across different communities. Louis uses mutual benefit approaches to broaden participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education. His work focuses on building capacity for sustained access to essential human services, especially in marginalized communities, and he defines sustainability as the ability to provide sustained access to services at the required quantity and quality over the required planning horizon at minimal economic, environmental, and social costs to present and future generations.

Socioeconomic vulnerability and climate risk in coastal Virginia
Climate Risk Management · 2023 · 18 citations
Senior authorCorrespondingCoastal Virginia, a region with economic and strategic significance at the state and national level, has been experiencing the highest sea-level rise (SLR) on the Atlantic coast of the United States. This has been accompanied by a variety of climate hazards such as flooding and more frequent storms, initiating adaptation planning and decision-making on multiple governance levels. A spatial understanding of climate risk and its associations with socioeconomic vulnerabilities raises essential ques…
Advances in Difference Equations · 2021-09-06 · 12 citations
articleOpen accessAbstract Cholera is a waterborne disease that continues to pose serious public health problems in many developing countries. Increasing water and sanitation coverage is a goal for local authorities in these countries, as it can eliminate one of the root causes of cholera transmission. The SIWDR (susceptible–infected–water–dumpsite–recovered) model is proposed here to evaluate the effects of the improved coverage of water and sanitation services in a community at risk of a cholera outbreak. This…
Journal of Water Sanitation and Hygiene for Development · 2021 · 9 citations
Senior authorCorrespondingAbstract Access to water supply and sanitation services remains a challenge in many parts of the world. The expected growth of the world's population, from about 7.8 billion people today to 9.8 billion people by 2050, and to around 11 billion people by the end of 2100, will create even higher demand and a greater strain on these basic services. Goal 6 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) aims to ‘Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all’…
