About

Fred Wu, M.D., Ph.D., is an assistant professor at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC and also holds a position in the Department of Internal Medicine at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. His research focuses on developing precision-based treatments for childhood cancers, particularly using advanced technologies such as focused ultrasound (FUS) to enhance drug delivery to treat aggressive and rare brain tumors like diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) and diffuse midline glioma (DMG). Dr. Wu aims to leverage technological advances from Virginia Tech and clinical expertise from Children's National to improve cancer care for children. His work involves exploring the safety and feasibility of focused ultrasound-mediated blood-brain barrier opening, which can increase the delivery and efficacy of systemic therapies for brain tumors. With labs located at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute in Roanoke and the Children's National Research & Innovation Campus in Washington, D.C., Dr. Wu is dedicated to advancing cancer treatment through innovative research and collaboration. His background includes a medical degree and a doctorate in pharmacology from New York Medical College, along with extensive experience in radiation oncology from Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He has received multiple honors and awards for his research and is actively involved in pioneering efforts to improve outcomes for children with cancer.
