About

I am an Universitair Docent (Assistant Professor) at the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy at the University of Amsterdam, where I do research at the interface of astronomy and data science. I am particularly interested in how we can use modern statistical tools and machine learning methods to learn about the universe. With my students and collaborators, I currently work on a diverse range of topics, including unsupervised learning of Fast Radio Burst time series, simulation-based inference and neural network emulators for complex astrophysical models of high-energy phenomena, machine learning and causal inference in exoplanet demographics, and machine learning models of systematic effects in X-ray telescopes.

  • The Radius of the High-mass Pulsar PSR J0740+6620 with 3.6 yr of NICER Data

    The Astrophysical Journal · 2024-10-01 · 147 citations

    articleOpen access

Abstract We report an updated analysis of the radius, mass, and heated surface regions of the massive pulsar PSR J0740+6620 using Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) data from 2018 September 21 to 2022 April 21, a substantial increase in data set size compared to previous analyses. Using a tight mass prior from radio-timing measurements and jointly modeling the new NICER data with XMM-Newton data, the inferred equatorial radius and gravitational mass are <mml:math xmlns:mml="http:…

  • A NICER View of the 1.4 <i>M</i> ⊙ Edge-on Pulsar PSR J0614-3329

    The Astrophysical Journal · 2025-12-04 · 30 citations

    articleOpen access

Abstract Four neutron star radius measurements have already been obtained by modeling the X-ray pulses of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars observed by the Neutron Star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER). We report here the radius measurement of PSR J0614−3329 employing the same method with NICER and XMM-Newton data using Bayesian inference. For all different models tested, including one with unrestricted inclination prior, we retrieve very similar nonantipodal hot region geometries and ra…

  • Discovery of spin-phase-dependent QPOs in the supercritical accretion regime from the X-ray pulsar RX J0440.9+4431

    Astronomy and Astrophysics · 2023-11-13 · 7 citations

    articleOpen access

RX J0440.9+4431 is an accreting X-ray pulsar (XRP) that remained relatively unexplored until recently, when major X-ray outburst activity enabled more in-depth studies. Here, we report on the discovery of ~0.2 Hz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) from this source observed with Fermi -GBM. The appearance of QPOs in RX J0440.9+4431 is triple transient, that is, QPOs appear only above a certain luminosity, only at certain pulse phases (namely corresponding to the peak of its sine-like pulse profil…

  • Modelling variability power spectra of active galaxies from irregular time series

    arXiv (Cornell University) · 2025-01-10 · 1 citations

    preprintOpen access

A common feature of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is their random variations in brightness across the whole emission spectrum, from radio to $γ$-rays. Studying the nature and origin of these fluctuations is critical to characterising the underlying variability process of the accretion flow that powers AGN. Random timing fluctuations are often studied with the power spectrum; this quantifies how the amplitude of variations is distributed over temporal frequencies. Red noise variability -- when the…
