About
Craig T. Smith joined the University of North Carolina School of Law faculty in 2010, where he serves as a Clinical Professor of Law, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Assistant Dean for the Writing and Learning Resources Center. His work primarily focuses on legal research and writing, and he is involved in operating Carolina’s nationally ranked legal writing program and an Academic Excellence Program. Smith's teaching includes courses such as Research, Reasoning, Writing, & Advocacy I & II, the Honors Writing Scholar Seminar and Lab, and Writing for Practice. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals, participated in various committees of the Legal Writing Institute (LWI), and has held leadership roles including chairing accreditation teams for the American Bar Association. Smith was awarded the Thomas F. Blackwell Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Legal Writing in 2021 by ALWD and LWI. His educational background includes a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where he served on the law review and graduated cum laude, an LL.M. magna cum laude from the Universitaet Potsdam, and a B.A. in Government from the College of William and Mary. His professional experience includes practicing law at Pierce Atwood, working in Germany as a Bosch Fellow, clerking for Judge James Carr of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, and teaching at Penn State’s Dickinson School of Law and Vanderbilt University Law School.
