Ceren Yarar-Fisher, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Ohio State College of Medicine. She serves as Vice Chair of Research and Director of Clinical Research at the Belford Center for Spinal Cord Injury Research. Her translational research laboratory studies the pathophysiology of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) in both acute and chronic stages, with the goal of developing novel nutritional and rehabilitation strategies to enhance neurorecovery, metabolic health, bowel function, and microbiome composition. Her work involves developing and testing therapeutic diets and electrical stimulation programs aimed at preventing neuronal death, promoting recovery, and improving body composition, gut microbiome, skeletal muscle, and bowel health in individuals with SCI. Dr. Yarar-Fisher's research includes evaluating the role of the microbiome on bowel health after SCI and investigating ketogenic diets for neurological recovery, supported by active funding from the State of Ohio and the NIH. She is also involved in clinical trials assessing the effectiveness of devices for motor function restoration in SCI patients. Her professional memberships include the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals, the American Spinal Injury Association, and the American Physiological Society.
