Professor C. Armando Duarte is the Nathan M. Newmark Distinguished Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He teaches courses in methods of structural analysis, structural mechanics, analysis and mechanics of plates and shells, and advanced finite element methods. His research interests include computational mechanics and methods such as Generalized Finite Element and mesh-free methods, three-dimensional computational fracture mechanics, multi-scale modeling of sharp thermal gradients and polycrystalline materials, and multi-physic simulations of hydraulic fracturing. Dr. Duarte has made significant contributions to the field, with over 100 scientific articles and book chapters, a co-authored book, and two edited books on computational methods. His work has been highly cited, with more than 9,000 citations, and he has been recognized as one of the highest-cited researchers in his field. He has served as a visiting scholar at multiple international institutions and has been an invited keynote and plenary speaker at numerous conferences, organizing symposia in his area of expertise.
