About

Berkcan Akpinar, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He specializes in sports orthopedic surgery, with a focus on shoulder and elbow surgery, as well as hip and knee reconstruction. Dr. Akpinar provides both non-operative and operative treatments for injuries to the shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle, including fractures, dislocations, tendon and ligament tears, complex knee and shoulder surgeries, and joint replacements. He performs surgeries with robotic and computer-navigation assistance and treats chronic degenerative conditions such as arthritis through injections, therapy, and joint replacements. His career in orthopedic surgery was inspired by his own experiences with injury and the care he received, particularly from the late Dr. Freddie H. Fu, a pioneer in ACL surgery and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Akpinar completed his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, with a degree in chemistry. He trained in orthopedic surgery at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, where he received the Safety Star Award for exceptional patient care. His fellowship training in sports medicine and shoulder surgery was completed at Harvard Medical School's Massachusetts General Hospital, where he also served as an assistant team physician for several professional and collegiate sports teams, including the Boston Bruins, Boston College athletics, the Boston Red Sox, and the New England Patriots. His clinical focus includes treating a wide range of conditions related to sports injuries and degenerative joint diseases.
