About
Augusto Oyuela-Caycedo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Florida, with a background rooted in anthropology and archaeology. He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology from Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia, and completed his Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh. His early research focused on the origins of the Tairona culture and its relationship to the environment, proposing that the forest in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is an archaeological artifact of indigenous human actions. He developed community-based research initiatives, including the creation of Colombia's first communal museum in collaboration with local communities. His research spans ethnographic and archaeological studies across the Amazon, Peru, Ethiopia, and Southeast Asia, with a focus on indigenous social organization, fishing technology, early human modifications of rock shelters, and historical ecology. He has excavated sites such as Quistococha near Iquitos and Tumshicayo in Peru, and has collaborated on projects related to the history of science, sustainable development, and the social life of plants. Oyuela-Caycedo has also contributed to academic mentorship, supervising Ph.D. students working on indigenous peoples and archaeology in various countries. He has published four books and over 100 articles in multiple languages, and continues to work on topics related to the history of science and historical ecology.
