About

Angela Pittman is an Assistant Arts Professor in the Department of Dance at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She holds a BA in Dance from Old Dominion University and an MFA in Dance and Choreography from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is also a Certified Professional Teacher of The Umfundalai Technique, NAAADT. Angie Pittman is a New York-based dancer and choreographer whose work sits within the Black Radical Tradition. Her artistic practice uses dance, text, and sound to explore nuanced and experimental portrayals of Black dance, investigating how the body moves through themes such as ballad, groove, sparkle, spirit, spirituals, ancestry, vulnerability, and power. Her choreographic works have been performed at notable venues including The Kitchen, Gibney Dance, BAAD!, Movement Research at Judson Church, Triskelion Arts, STooPS, The Domestic Performance Agency, The KnockDown Center, The Invisible Dog, The Chocolate Factory, Danspace Project, and Roulette. Angie has collaborated with artists such as A Sef, Jasmine Hearn, Jonathan Gonzalez, Athena Kokoronis, and Anita Mullin. She was awarded a Bessie for Outstanding Performer in 2017 for her work with Skeleton Architecture and received a Bessie nomination for Outstanding Breakout Choreographer in 2022. Her work has been supported by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant and residencies through Tofte Lake Center, Movement Research, New Dance Alliance Black Artists Space to Create, and Djerassi.…
