About

Angela Odoms-Young is the Nancy Schlegel Meinig Associate Professor of Maternal and Child Nutrition in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University. Her research explores how social and structural factors influence dietary behaviors and contribute to disparities in diet-related chronic diseases. Using a life course approach, she examines the impact of intersecting systems of oppression—including racism, economic inequality, and environmental injustice—on food access, food security, dietary patterns, and health outcomes, particularly within historically marginalized communities. Her work is dedicated to developing culturally responsive programs and policies that promote whole-person health, healing, and community resilience, employing community-engaged approaches to empower communities in building sustainable food systems and improving nutritional well-being. Beyond her research, Dr. Odoms-Young has played a significant role in shaping national food and nutrition policy. She has served on advisory committees and boards such as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Food and Nutrition Board, contributing to policy discussions on advancing nutrition science. She has also participated in developing nutrition standards for federal programs like the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, and WIC, and co-chaired the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Scientific Review Committee. Her efforts have helped influence policies impacting millions of families, fostering systemic change toward healthier and more equitable food environments at the national level.
