About

Alaattin Kaya is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. His educational background includes a B.S. in Biology from Dumlupinar University in Turkey, an M.Sc. in Biotechnology from Izmir Institute of Technology in Turkey, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has also completed postdoctoral training in Medicine/Genetics at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on the mechanistic understanding of pathways regulating cellular aging and age-related disease progression. His lab employs interdisciplinary and multi-model approaches, integrating biology, engineering, computer science, and medicine, to study aging. The research involves high-throughput technologies, computational sciences, molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry, utilizing model systems such as budding yeast, roundworms, mice, and primates. His work aims to uncover conserved regulation of lifespan in response to pharmaceutical and dietary interventions implicated in human longevity, with the ultimate goal of helping to delay and reverse aging and age-related pathologies. His research program includes identifying candidate molecular determinants of aging through systems-level studies, validating lifespan and healthspan extension mechanisms, translating findings to higher models, and collaborating for clinical translation. His work has contributed to understanding the biological processes underlying aging and age-related diseases, with a focus on developing interventions to improve healthspan and lifespan.
