About
Zhi Lin is a professor in the School of Art + Art History + Design at the University of Washington, specializing in painting and drawing. He holds an MFA from the University of Delaware (1992) and from the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London (1989), as well as postgraduate studies at the China Academy of Art (1987) and a BFA from the same institution (1982). Lin has exhibited his work extensively in museums across the United States, United Kingdom, and China, including the Princeton University Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and the China Academy of Art Museum. His work is part of the collections of several prominent institutions, such as the Princeton University Art Museum, the Frye Art Museum, and the Oxford University Ashmolean Museum. Lin's artistic focus includes themes related to Chinese history and migration, exemplified by works like 'Constellations over the Sierra Nevada' and 'Five Capital Punishments in China.' He has received numerous awards and fellowships, including recognition from the Humanities Council at Princeton University, the University of Washington, Creative Capital Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition to his teaching and artistic practice, Lin is an affiliated faculty member at the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington since 2001, engaging in research that explores Chinese migration and history through his art.

Superconductivity in metallic twisted bilayer graphene stabilized by WSe2
Nature · 307 citations
Abstract Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), with rotational misalignment close to 1.1 degrees, features isolated flat electronic bands that host a rich phase diagram of correlated insulating, superconducting, ferromagnetic and topological phases1–6. Correlated insulators and superconductivity have been previously observed only for angles within 0.1 degree of the magic angle and occur in adjacent or overlapping electron-density ranges; nevertheless, the origins of these states and the re…

devices. As the magnetic state is tuned through the canted magnetic phase, we observe a band crossing, i.e., the closing and reopening of the bulk band gap, corresponding to the concurrent topological phase transition in both even- and odd-layer-number devices. Our findings shed new light on the interplay between band topology and magnetic order in this newly discovered topological magnet.
Electric control of a canted-antiferromagnetic Chern insulator
Nature Communications · 2022-03-29 · 66 citations
articleOpen accessAbstract The interplay between band topology and magnetism can give rise to exotic states of matter. For example, magnetically doped topological insulators can realize a Chern insulator that exhibits quantized Hall resistance at zero magnetic field. While prior works have focused on ferromagnetic systems, little is known about band topology and its manipulation in antiferromagnets. Here, we report that MnBi 2 Te 4 is a rare platform for realizing a canted-antiferromagnetic (cAFM) Chern insulator…
Magnetism and Its Structural Coupling Effects in 2D Ising Ferromagnetic Insulator VI3
Nano Letters · 2021-11-01 · 48 citations
articleOpen access1st authorvan der Waals (vdW) magnets have emerged as a tunable platform for exploring a variety of layer-dependent magnetic phenomena. Here we probe the thickness-dependent magnetism of vanadium triiodide (VI3), a material known as a layered ferromagnetic Mott insulator in its bulk form, using magnetic circular dichroism microscopy. Robust ferromagnetism is observed in all thin layers, down to the monolayer limit with large coercive fields. In contrast to known vdW magnets, the Curie temperature shows an…
