About
Professor Yalin Li leads the Li Research Group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, focusing on advancing the sustainability of water and energy infrastructure through integrated experimentation and modeling. His research centers on the experimental development of thermochemical and catalytic technologies for bioprocess engineering and resource recovery, particularly targeting resource recovery from wet organic wastes. These wastes, characterized by their large quantities and heterogeneous nature, present challenges for valorization but offer potential for cost-effective and environmentally positive management through tailored processes. Professor Li's group has investigated the valorization of various feedstocks such as algae, wastewater sludge, and fat, oil, and grease for producing biofuels, fertilizers, and platform chemicals, utilizing hydrothermal technologies like hydrothermal liquefaction and catalytic hydrothermal gasification that are well-suited for processing high-moisture and complex wastes while simultaneously destroying emerging contaminants such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Building on this experimental foundation, Professor Li employs quantitative sustainable design (QSD) methodology to guide research, development, and deployment of technologies and to inform decision-making. This approach integrates techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, and sustainability indicators…
