Vladimir Drinfeld

About

Vladimir Drinfeld is the Harry Pratt Judson Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Mathematics at The University of Chicago. His research primarily focuses on the Geometric Langlands program, which is a part of geometric representation theory. He is engaged in developing the theory of character sheaves for unipotent groups, working jointly with Mitya Boyarchenko. Their work aims to understand the irreducible characters of unipotent groups over finite fields through the lens of perverse sheaves called character sheaves, inspired by Lusztig's work on reductive groups. Drinfeld has been recognized for his contributions to mathematics, notably winning the prestigious Shaw Prize as of January 22, 2024. His academic role involves both research and teaching, and he is associated with the Department of Mathematics at The University of Chicago, located in Eckhart Hall.
